Development of the Food Processing Sector in Ethiopia

Development of the Food Processing Sector in Ethiopia

 Deadline Date: October 09, 2025

The Leverist.de is accepting applications for Development of the Food Processing Sector to support the development of the food processing industry with your expertise.

Your Benefits

  • Find local partners
  • Take advantage of local contacts and networks provided by GIZ to sustainably implement your business solution.

They want to achieve these sustainable development goals:

  • No Poverty
  • Decent Work and Economic Growth.

The Business Opportunity

  • The aim of this project is to improve agricultural and food processing, increase local added value, create new jobs and also further open the national and international market for Ethiopian agricultural and food products. To this end, they work together with local and international companies, arrange stable, reliable partnerships, contacts with government organisations and have experts on site. Considerable advantages for your company if you want to become active in Ethiopia!

How your contribution to development cooperation works

  • In Ethiopia, even in years with good rainfall the traditional cultivation methods are no longer sufficient to supply the domestic market adequately. While the country had around 40 million inhabitants in 1985, it is now the second largest country in terms of population with 97 million. The growing population leads to less fertile land and thus to less income for the individual.
  • Ethiopia is rich in agricultural products, but is in need of know-how for food processing. Most products are exported as pure raw materials and do not generate any local added value in the country itself. The processing of wheat is also limited to bread, biscuits or, as with faba beans, flour. There is a lack of knowledge and modern technology for the profitable processing of these products in Ethiopia itself. For this reason, contract farming concepts are not yet widespread in Ethiopia, although there is a great need for them, especially for the country's mills. This is where European companies with appropriate expertise have great market opportunities!
  • Ethiopia's economy has grown by an average of 10.7 % per year over the last ten years. This is more than twice as much as the African average south of the Sahara in the same period (5.1%). At the same time, agriculture accounts for 41 percent of Ethiopia's gross domestic product.
  • Agriculture plays an important role in Ethiopian society. Around 80 percent of the population are small farmers, and agriculture accounts for 41 percent of the gross domestic product. In the so-called "high potential areas" of Ethiopia, considerable productivity increases are possible, which could also be used to supply other parts of the country or even make Ethiopia a net food exporter.
  • GIZ has a strong presence in Ethiopia through several development projects and provides valuable contacts to potential business partners, local experts and organisations and government institutions for companies wishing to operate there. Advantages that can be put to best use!

Who are they looking for?

  • They are looking for companies involved in the agricultural processing of wheat and factory beans and in contract farming.
